December, 2011

Paint and Carpet - Ministry teams from local churches decended on Gloria's house in November and December to finish the drywall, paint the home and install carpet.  The materials were supplied by an anonymous donor and matched by Community Foundation funding to make the project happen.

Inside and Out - Church for the Beach loved and blessed a new friend in November.  They cleaned the inside of the house, cleaned up the yard and began repainting the house.

The Refrigerator - A single mom was referred to Love INC from a partner church.  Her refrigerator had died and she needed some help to restock her supply of food.  She didn't need a refrigerator because it was rent-to-own and would be replaced.  But she still owed $150 per month for 12 more months.  Within a few weeks, a family from a church in Melbourne called Love INC to donate furniture, including a refrigerator that was just the right size to replace the rent-to-own fridge!  Our transport team delivered the fridge and the family is now saving $150 per month!

At the same time, her a/c unit had been leaking for a few weeks, but they couldn't afford to fix it.  We called a Love INC A/C business partner who was on site the same week and repaired the leak for under $100.  Her home church covered the cost of the repair!

May, 2011
Raising the Walls - Suntree United Methodist Church, Covenant Presbyterian Church and members of the Love INC Home Repair team decended upon Gloria's home in May. The goal...raise the walls.  The teams replaced rotten T1-11 on the exterior and began installing new drywall inside the home.  One step closer as we prepare to paint in June.

A friend of Love INC from Vero Beach traveled to Palm Bay to repair the car of a Love INC Client.  After two visits, he was able to diagnose and repair the car.

Ready for the Storms - Our friend Eula Mae's home has been leaking since the hurricanes in 2004.  See more of her story in October and November, 2010 below.  In December, we received word that Within Reach, a new ministry partner, was willing to lead the project and had roofers who would volunteer their service.  We moved to action.  Two local churches committed to giving more than $1500 for the project.  In total, over three days of service, 30 volunteers gave over 170 hours of their time in this re-roof project.  Eight Churches and four ministries contributed time, talent and financial support, and today, Eula Mae is ready for the storm.  Our next step is to tear out and replace the carpet and ceiling in the garage.  Find out more about Home Restoration Projects and give to the Home Restorations Fund or by discovering opportunities to join our Home Repair volunteer team.

Many Love INC partner churches participated in adopting families for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.  Here is one of the stories that came out of the many visits.  Notice the relational love expressed not just through toys, but also through time, projects and repeated visits.

"We did bring out the presents for Christmas. The company my friend works for also helped us with the family. They bought 4 toys for each child, gave the mom a $175 gift card, a $100 gift card for the daughter away at college and made up Christmas stockings for the children. We also gave each child shoes, socks, underwear, an outfit and a sweatshirt or jacket.

When I visited them at Thanksgiving I brought a cookie decorating project so I could get to know the children a little better. Then when we went back last week we took some crafts for the kids to do. I invited the family to church this past Sunday. The girls came and had a great time. They said they would like to come back every Sunday. The family has many challenges, one child is autistic, one has learning disabilities, their home is very small, there is no heat and they have no transportation. Their mom has had her hours cut at work and is looking for another full time or part time job to supplement her income. We were so happy to help this family and we hope to maintain a relationship with them. Thanks for all you do for the needy in our community."

Covered in Prayer - One of partner churches has been visiting and praying with Eula Mae.  Here is a recent account on answered prayer and God's love and protection.

Our team of workers have been praying (both with Eula Mae and on our own) that her home would be safe — a safe place from the dangers in that tough community. One of our goals was to cover her with prayer, and to make the place safer by repairing doors, adding dead-bolts and bar locks, which we did.

In a past discussion about safety of the neighborhood, she commented to me that the home next door has been a hang-out for a group of rowdy people. She suspected that the group in that house were into drugs and that they may have been the ones who stole her yard tools and stripped her lawn mower.

Last week when I saw her again, she shared that the house next door was very quiet this week. When questioned, she said the police had been there the past weekend and as a result, there has been a big change in the activities there.  I don't know what actually happened, but it sounds to me like the Lord was working to make Eula Mae's place safer. I do not believe she called the police on the occupants or that she even talked to the police, I think this visit occurred as an answer to prayer.

Praise His Name!

Taking Church on the Road - A woman in Central Brevard who has been afraid to go to church has invited four pastors to her home to hear her story, explore how they can help and pray for her needs.  Praise God for those willing to take the love of Christ into the homes of people who are hurting and afraid!

New RefrigeratorWhen It Rains - Blue tarps cover Eula Mae’s* roof ineptly defending her home from the rain outside. Volunteers and friends installed layer upon layer since the hurricanes initially wreaked havoc in 2004. It was for this reason that Eula Mae first called Love INC, and the motivation for our visit that cloudy October day.

I arrived with Rick, a follower of Christ from Melbourne Community Church. Eula Mae’s hospitality was gracious. We talked and looked around. The damage from the roof was evident, but so was the damaged floor, the broken light fixture and the space in the kitchen where the refrigerator belonged. We then discovered that Eula Mae had survived for months utilizing her freezer to keep perishable food and mopping up the floor each time it rained. All the windows were open, as they remained even in the middle of the summer, because Eula Mae could not afford to run the air conditioning.

Rain began to pour outside as we sat at the dining room table. Surprisingly the water crept into the house not from the ceiling, but instead from beneath the door where thresholds usually reside. Despite her circumstances, Eula Mae loved her home and took great care of it. She passionately shared with us about her business, giving a quick sales pitch while she had our attention. We were honored to hear her story of perseverance and hope. After praying and hugging we headed back to the church.

Rick mobilized a team of men from the Church and returned days later with a refrigerator and lawnmower from the Love INC network. They replaced the threshold and the kitchen light fixture. Rick was concerned about security, so they installed a dead-bolt lock and created a lock system for the back door. They also came bearing food, 1000 new business cards and an invitation for Eula Mae to use the Church for future business meetings.

Roger, a member from another Love INC church works in the same business and helped Eula Mae with her first business meeting at Melbourne Community Church. She returned the following week to attend church for the first time. We continue to visit, love and pray and are thankful that Eula Mae is engaging with Love INC and connecting to her new friends at Melbourne Community Church.

We Got it Covered - We have been helping a friend and her daughter in Central Brevard for the last few months.  Three years earlier, a young man in a stolen car veered off the road and hit the house.  The master bedroom was detached from the house leaving it open to the environment.  While waiting for repairs to be completed, the roof is leaking.  Pastor Bill and Pastor Brant from Nomad Community Church installed a tarp donated by Lowes to help keep the water out of their home.

July, 2010

Demo - A local contractor joined the students from Suntree United Methodist Church to accomplish the demolition project for our friend in Central Brevard.  They stripped out all the interior flooring, walls and ceiling.  They also cleared out the brush from outside the building, and hauled all of it to the dump.  In all, about 30 students and adults spent a day and a half working on the project.
